March is the month to celebrate Women’s History and here at Athelhampton, we are celebrating the achievements of the prolific Russian artist, Marevna. In fact, we have our entire West-Wing gallery dedicated to her work.
Marevna was one of the first women to discover the visual art style of Cubism, which is evident in her early year creations. After spending much of her early life travelling Europe, Marevna eventually settled with her daughter Marika and her husband Rodney Phillips in England. From 1948 she spent 8 years residing at Athelhampton House where she continued to paint. Her world famous painting of Athelhampton’s Pyramid Gardens was painted during this time and is one of her many remarkable creations displayed in our gallery.
Why not come along to see Marevna’s work for yourself? You can make a day of it by strolling through the array of gardens, wandering the historic house and treating yourself to lunch or afternoon tea in our Topiary Restaurant.
Or, if you would like to make a weekend of it and are looking for accommodation in Dorchester, then we have our very own River Cottage, which is nestled in the grounds of Athelhampton and is available to hire.
