Dorset is the back drop for the new release of the much-anticipated film, Far from the Madding Crowd, which is based on the classic love story by Thomas Hardy and is set to be released on the 1st May.
Starring Carrie Mulligan as the heroine, Bathsheba Everdene a beautiful and headstrong woman who inherits her uncle’s farm and decides to manage it herself, which is met by disapproval from the farming community. You follow her story as she gets entwined in the lives of three suitors. Will she marry the sheep farmer, soldier or dashing wealthy bachelor?
Lots of Dorset locals attended casting calls in the hope of featuring as support artists and will be eagerly awaiting to see if they make it onto the big screen.
Several months were spent filming in Dorset capturing the adaptation of Hardy’s classic novel.
Mapperton House near Beaminster was transformed for filming, its grounds turned into a farmyard and false walls were put up. Visitors are unable to stay at Mapperton House as the Earl of Sandwich still resides there with his wife, the Countess of Sandwich, but guests are offered the chance to visit the stunning House and Gardens.
This is much in the same manner as here at Athelhampton. Although Athelhampton, whilst not a Manor House Hotel, still offers accommodation through its self catering cottage, River cottage. Both offer a great day out for those who enjoy exploring Country Manors and well maintained formal gardens steeped in history.
