Athelhampton
is often used in TV, Film, Radio and in Advertising. On occasion
the use of Athelhampton is quite obvious as in the Antiques
Roadshow or in numerous Gardening Programmes. On occasion the
use of Athelhampton is for its historical significance. The use of
Athelhampton for Dr David Starkey's Elizabeth documentary is
only noticable to those who have an intimate knowledge of the
House & Gardens.

Slueth - 1971
Michael Caine and Laurence Olivier
The House & Gardens were exclusively used for all the exterior shots.
This also included the erection of a maze specially for the film in the
sunken part of the Great Court and also the addition of a number of statues
beside the front drive. The opening sequence sees Michael Caine arriving at the house in a "K"
registration red MGB Roadster, the new car of the day. This car has been
a resident here for a few years following its restoration and is paraded
on special occasions and not surprisingly when the MG Owners club meet
here.
Other sequences in the film where the house is featured on location
are where Michael Caine tries to escape several times during the film.
An important part of the plot where the house features is when Michael
Caine breaks into the house as a would be burglar and also the finale where
Laurence Olivier stands in the front porch gazing despairingly at the flashing
blue light of the approaching police car.
The interior sequences were filmed at Pinewood studios where the set
was constructed with similarities to some of the rooms at Athelhampton.
During filming at Athelhampton the two actors were given the servants
quarters in the north wing as dressing rooms. Michael Caine was particularly
interested in some garden construction which was taking place near the
greenhouses. A lime tree cloister surrounding an octagonal pond was being
created and the design was later used for New Palace Yard at the Palace
of Westminster.
